What is the Express Entry Program?

Canadian Immigration Program that allows immigrants to live and work in Canada as a skilled worker through Express Entry.

The new system will allow Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to pro-actively assess, recruit and select immigrants who are skilled and/or possessed the relevant qualifications under federal economic immigration programs.

 

How Express Entry Works

  • Eligibility Check: Check if you qualify for FSWP, FSTP, or CEC.

  • Create Profile: Submit an online profile with details about your skills, work experience, etc.

  • Get CRS Score: Your profile is assessed, and you get a CRS score.

  • Enter Pool: If eligible, your profile enters the Express Entry pool.

  • Draws & ITAs: The government conducts draws, inviting top-scoring candidates to apply.

  • Apply: If invited, you have 60 days to apply for permanent residence.

  • Processing & Decision: Most complete applications are processed within six months. If approved, you get permanent residence.

 

Stage 1: Before You Apply

  1. Check Eligibility: See if you qualify for FSWP, FSTP, or CEC.
  2. Language Tests: Take approved language tests.
  3. ECA: Get foreign education assessed if applicable.
  4. Gather Documents: Collect required documents (passports, work experience letters, etc.).
  5. Estimate CRS Score: Use the online tool.

Stage 2: Express Entry Profile

  1. Create Profile: Fill in your details online.
  2. Enter Pool: If eligible, you’ll enter the pool and get a CRS score.
  3. Provincial Nomination (Optional): Explore if it applies to you.

Stage 3: Invitation to Apply

  1. Express Entry Draws: The government holds regular draws.
  2. Receive ITA: If your CRS score is high enough, you’ll get an ITA.

Stage 4: Permanent Residence Application

  1. Submit Application: You have 60 days after the ITA to apply.
  2. Pay Fees: Pay processing fees.
  3. Biometrics & Medical: Provide biometrics and complete a medical exam.
  4. Police Clearance: Get certificates from countries you’ve lived in.

Stage 5: Processing and Decision

  1. Processing: Your application is reviewed.
  2. Decision: Most are done within six months. If approved, you get COPR and a visa.
  3. Landing: Travel to Canada and complete landing procedures.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR EXPRESS ENTRY?

  • Age – below 40 years
  • Education – Should be a graduate
  • Work Experience – 3+ years of experience
  • English Language Skills – proved by attempting IELTS Assessment

Preparing for Canada Express Entry

  • IELTS: a language test is required for in order to apply for Permanent Resident Visa.
  • Credential assessment: Foreign diplomas are given an equivalent value in Canada. Credential assessment is an important first step towards filing an application.
  • Resume and reference letters: Create an updated resume and determine how to obtain references that may be useful for job search during the permanent residence or PR process for Canada.

Express Entry Criteria

Applicants must qualify for one of Canada’s four economic immigration programs:

  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Provincial Nominee Program

For applicant’s living outside Canada, this will normally mean qualifying for either the federal skilled worker program or the federal skilled trades program.

Special Note for Internationally Trained Physicians (ITPs)

Practice Eligibility Route (PER): The PER provides an expedited pathway to licensure, with the Canadian practice requirement recently reduced to 2 years, making it quicker for internationally trained physicians to begin their careers in Canada.
